The Invaders: A Closer Look at Cockroaches

cockroach

Don't you hate it when you jump from surprise as you open the cupboard and find two black beady eyes staring back at you? Almost everyone hates cockroaches as these invaders don't only bring sickness, but they are just plain disgusting. Furthermore, just like a termite infestation, cockroaches can silently invade your homes without you even being aware.

According to Wikipedia, cockroaches live in a wide range of environments around the world. Pest species adapt readily to a variety of environments, but prefer warm conditions found within buildings.

Furthermore, cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces, as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. These chemical trails transmit bacteria onto surfaces. Aside from the dangers these host of bacteria and germs spread, the other cockroaches will follow these trails as it usually indicates sources of food and water plus meet up with their buddies in their hiding places. Thus, cockroaches can exhibit emergent behavior, in which groups or swarm behavior emerges from a simple set of individual interactions.

Several studies have also confirmed how cockroaches, as well as its cast-off skins, dead bodies and droppings can aggravate allergies, especially in children and sensitive individuals.

We should all already know by now that Cockroaches are nocturnal and live in groups. Our presentation materials show you how they love to seek and stay in cracks and crevices that are warm, dark, and moist. This means they can live and thrive even in stacked paper as much as in garbage and food preparation areas. This is because they eat anything that is organic, even cardboard and the glue that binds books together.

With plenty of food, warmth and water, your home is an ideal breeding ground for certain pest species of cockroaches. Cockroaches can enter your home in many different ways, from the outside through cracks and crevices, vents, sewer, drain pipes and even from the gap in your doors.

The worst part is cockroaches reproduce very fast. For every one you see there can be many, many more hiding and multiplying behind your walls. This is why seeing even one roach should already alarm you. The German Cockroach species for one with 36 nymphs per egg capsule and quick development cycle of just 2 to 3 months means a single female cockroach can produce up to 100,000 roaches in just one year! This is why when we see these sleazy, dirty crawlies in the daytime, it is an indication of severe infestation because they are already getting over-crowded in their hiding places.

Cockroaches are better at hiding than you are at finding them, and their eggs are naturally protected so that they can't be penetrated by most over-the-counter insecticides. This is why killing one or two or using do-it-yourself methods does not mean you've won the battle against these invaders. For more sustained cockroach management, it is worthwhile to get the professionals to do it— even just for your homes, but most especially for larger establishments. And do take note of the methods that your preferred Pest Control Operator provides, because each establishment has its own unique conditions that will require certain skills and techniques than standard solutions. So don't just pick any PCO, study their qualifications and always go for the long-term results.
